Southern Illinois beckons travelers with a number of attractions, from the
larger than life statue of comicbook hero Superman in Metropolis, to several
parks and recreation areas that dot the region. Carbondale is home to one of
the Southern Illinois University campuses, an institution that was founded in
1869 and today is the city's largest employer. A public beach and boat dock
is maintained by the city at Cedar Park, a local haven for picnicking and a
variety of outdoor activities during the summer months. Mount Vernon is a nearby
town that boasts Sensation Station Skateland, a modern roller rink with an arcade,
batting cages and more. Mount Vernon also boasts a number of annual festivals,
celebrating everything from cars to crafts to sweet corn. The town of Effingham
is known for festivals of another kind. Focused primarily on cars, Effingham
hosts the Transportation Celebration, MidAmerica Corvette Funfest, VW Bugfest
and Porschefest every year.
